BEDFORD — The Lawrence County Council has scheduled a special meeting for Friday, March 13th, to address urgent personnel needs within the county’s correctional system.

The meeting will convene at 4:00 p.m. at the Lawrence County Courthouse, located at 916 15th Street, Suite 28, in Bedford.
The primary item on the agenda is a formal hiring request from Sheriff Greg Day regarding the Lawrence County Jail.

The request comes as the Sheriff’s Office continues to manage the complex staffing requirements of the county jail. In previous sessions, Sheriff Greg Day has characterized corrections officers as the “unsung heroes” of the local criminal justice system, highlighting their critical role in maintaining safety for both the community and incarcerated individuals.
Staffing levels at the facility have been a recurring topic of discussion for the Council. In late 2025 and early 2026, the department worked to combat turnover caused by lateral transfers to other agencies. State legislation passed recently has assisted the county in recouping training costs for officers who depart early in their tenure, but maintaining a full roster remains a priority for local public safety.
The special session is open to the public. The Council is expected to vote on the hiring request following a presentation by Sheriff Day.
The Council typically uses these special sessions to expedite approvals that cannot wait for the regular monthly meeting cycle, often due to the time-sensitive nature of public safety and emergency services recruitment.
