Authorities warn public after phone scam targets recently released inmate

LAWRENCE CO. – Local authorities are warning residents about a scam in which a caller falsely claims to represent law enforcement and demands payment for court-related fees.

The warning comes after a recently released Lawrence County inmate, who lives in Mitchell, reported being contacted by a man identifying himself as “Joseph Greene,” who claimed to be a law enforcement officer with badge number 8421. The caller told the victim he owed $1,500 for an ankle monitor and needed to pay immediately.

Believing the request was legitimate, the victim sent money through Cash App to an account labeled “Trust the Process.” The exact amount sent has not been confirmed.

After speaking with the Lawrence County Probation Department officials, the victim was advised to report the incident to local police in Mitchell. Authorities indicated the case may also be referred to the county sheriff’s department for further investigation. The victim was additionally encouraged to notify the court about the incident during an upcoming hearing.

Law enforcement officials emphasized that this type of request is a common scam. They noted that individuals will not be asked to send money for monitoring devices or other court programs over the phone or through payment apps. Typically, any fees related to court-ordered programs are handled directly through official channels after a judge orders participation.

Officials say they hope public awareness will prevent others from falling victim to similar schemes. They are encouraging residents to be cautious of unsolicited calls demanding payment and to report suspicious requests to local law enforcement immediately.

Authorities also stress that legitimate law enforcement agencies do not collect fees through phone calls, text messages, or mobile payment apps.
