Self-reported drunk driving leads to arrest after hit-and-run investigation

BEDFORD A Bedford man is facing multiple drunk driving charges after a bizarre series of events where he allegedly called 911 to report an accident and admitted to dispatchers that he had been drinking behind the wheel.

Jeffrey D. Henderson, 36, was arrested on February 26, 2026, following a “leaving-the-scene” accident report that he initiated himself.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Officer Thomas Porter of the Lawrence County Police Department, the incident began around 6:30 p.m. Henderson called Lawrence County Dispatch to report that another vehicle—a black four-door sedan driven by an acquaintance—had backed into his car on State Road 158, damaging his driver-side door.

During the recorded 911 call, Henderson reportedly made a startling admission to the dispatcher, stating that he had been “drinking and driving.”

When Officer Kenton Carter located Henderson’s vehicle on State Road 158 and activated his emergency lights, Henderson failed to stop immediately. The pursuit continued until Henderson finally pulled over at a residence on State Road 458, where he was detained.

Henderson was transported to the Lawrence County Security Center to undergo standardized field sobriety tests, which he failed. Henderson consented to a certified chemical breath test. The results showed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.100%, which is above Indiana’s legal limit of 0.08%.

Following the investigation, Henderson was incarcerated at the Lawrence County Jail on the following preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and OWI endangerment.
