MITCHELL — The Mitchell Band program is celebrating a historic season after breaking long-standing attendance and performance records at the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) District and State Solo and Ensemble events this month.

The streak of success began on February 7, when a large contingent of Mitchell students traveled to Bloomington High School North for the District Solo and Ensemble event. Performing for a panel of expert judges, the students were evaluated on technical skill and musicality.
The program reached a new milestone this year, surpassing all previous records for both participation and ratings. In total, Mitchell musicians brought home 15 Gold ratings and 3 Silver ratings.

Brennen Cooper Makes State History

Among the many successes, 8th-grade student Brennen Cooper achieved a feat not seen in the district for over half a decade. By earning a top rating on his Alto Saxophone performance at the district level, Cooper qualified for the ISSMA State Solo & Ensemble event.
This marks the first time in more than six years that a Mitchell student has qualified for the state level. Achieving this as an 8th grader is considered an exceptional accomplishment, reflecting significant musical dedication.
State Success in Indianapolis
On Saturday, February 28, Cooper traveled to North Central High School to represent the Mitchell Band at the state competition. He performed a Group 1 Alto Saxophone Solo, which represents the most advanced and challenging repertoire offered by ISSMA.
Cooper concluded his historic run by earning a Gold Rating at the state level, marking a major milestone for both his personal musical journey and the continued growth of the Mitchell Band program.
“This achievement highlights the hard work of our students,” the program noted in a statement. “We are incredibly proud of all who participated and look forward to even more success in the future.”
