Indiana agencies to host 11th Biennial “Operation Stay Afloat” in Indianapolis

INDIANA — The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) are joining forces once again for Operation Stay Afloat. The 11th biennial conference is scheduled for Thursday, March 12, 2026, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET at the Indiana State Government Center in downtown Indianapolis.

This premier event serves as a vital hub for all-hazard and floodplain management specialists across the state. By bringing together diverse experts, the conference aims to sharpen the tools, skills, and data necessary to protect Hoosier communities from natural disasters.

Operation Stay Afloat is designed to break down “silos” between public safety and land management sectors. The 2026 session will focus on the latest advancements in hazard preparedness and mitigation, specifically tailored to Indiana’s unique geography and flood risks.

The conference is open to a broad spectrum of professionals and community leaders dedicated to disaster resilience. Key invitees include:

  • Local Officials: Floodplain administrators, building officials, local CEOs, and state legislators.
  • Safety Experts: Emergency management officials and volunteer disaster groups.
  • Technical Specialists: Engineers, consultants, and representatives from river basin commissions or regional planning groups.
  • Community Advocates: Anyone with a passion for proactive disaster mitigation.

A major benefit for attendees is the opportunity to earn professional development credits. Operation Stay Afloat is slated to offer Continuing Education Credits/Units (CECs/CEUs) for several certifications, including:

  • CFM (Certified Floodplain Manager)
  • PEM (Professional Emergency Manager)
  • CEM (Certified Emergency Manager)
  • PE (Professional Engineer)

Those interested in attending must register by Monday, March 9, 2026. Following registration, attendees will receive detailed information on parking and directions to the specific conference rooms within the Government Center.
