Indiana DNR invites volunteers to join “Adopt-A-Ramp” program

INDIANA Indiana’s waterways are the lifeblood of the state’s outdoor recreation, and now, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is calling on citizens to help keep them pristine. Through the Adopt-A-Ramp program, individuals and organizations have a unique opportunity to make a tangible impact on the health of local ecosystems and the quality of public access.

With approximately 400 public access sites scattered across the state, the DNR relies on the “boots-on-the-ground” support of volunteers to ensure these areas remain safe and welcoming for boaters, anglers, and nature lovers alike.

The Adopt-A-Ramp program is designed to be highly accessible, catering to a wide range of volunteers including:

  • Families and Individuals looking for a consistent outdoor service project.
  • Corporate Workgroups seeking team-building opportunities that benefit the community.
  • Clubs and Non-Profits (such as scouting troops or fishing bards) dedicated to conservation.

Volunteers act as the “eyes and ears” of the DNR. By adopting a specific site, participants contribute to the longevity of Indiana’s natural resources through several key tasks:

  • Litter Control: Collecting trash and removing unsightly debris from boat ramps and parking lots.
  • Site Maintenance: Cutting back overgrown vegetation to maintain visibility and access.
  • Reporting: Acting as a vital link to the state by reporting structural issues or maintenance needs directly to public access staff.

By performing these simple but essential duties, volunteers ensure that Indiana’s waterways remain a healthy habitat for wildlife and a premier destination for recreation.

If you or your organization is ready to take ownership of a local ramp, the process is straightforward. Interested parties can reach out to the DNR’s public access team to find a site in their area that is currently available for adoption.
