Congresswoman Erin Houchen joined Mitchell Mayor Don Caudell as The Monon South Trail receives $1 million in federal grants

MITCHELL The Monon South Trail is set to expand in Lawrence County after receiving $1 million in federal Community Project Funding, a boost local and regional leaders say will strengthen economic development and outdoor recreation across Southern Indiana.

U.S. Rep. Erin Houchin joined city officials, including Mitchell Mayor Don Caudell, on Friday, Feb. 20, to celebrate the funding award. Representatives from Radius Indiana, a regional partner in the project, were also in attendance.

The grant will support the construction of a section of the trail between Mitchell and Orleans.

Houchin said the Monon South Trail, once completed, will span more than 60 miles across Clark, Washington, Orange, and Lawrence Counties, creating a continuous corridor for walking, biking, and recreation.

“When completed, it will span over 60 miles across Clark, Washington, Orange, and Lawrence Counties,” Houchin said. “That kind of regional connectivity will create real opportunities. Opportunities for small businesses, tourism, recreation, and improved quality of life throughout Southern Indiana. It will give families a safe place to walk, ride, and enjoy the outdoors. It will also bring visitors to our downtowns and help position communities like Mitchell for long-term growth and success. Mitchell stepped up with a plan, and I was happy to support it. Projects like the Monon South Trail show what’s possible when local leadership and regional collaboration come together around a clear goal.”

Houchin also thanked Caudell for his partnership in advancing the project.

During the event, Caudell expressed appreciation for the federal support and emphasized the trail’s long-term impact on the city. He said the investment represents more than infrastructure — it reflects a commitment to Mitchell’s future by creating spaces for families, attracting visitors, and encouraging economic growth.

Mayor Caudell said of the event:

City officials and project partners, including Radius Indiana, said the new funding will help move construction forward on the Mitchell-to-Orleans segment, bringing the broader regional trail vision closer to completion. Leaders expect the extended trail to enhance connectivity among communities while providing a safe, accessible space for outdoor recreation.

The President and CEO of Radius Indiana, Jeff Quyle was on hand and voiced appreciation for the financial backing:

The Monon South Trail follows portions of a former railroad corridor and has been developed in phases through partnerships among local governments, regional organizations, and state and federal officials.
