BLOOMINGTON — Pantry 279, a staple of Southern Indiana’s hunger relief efforts, is issuing a call to action for local residents to help combat food insecurity.

Established in 2015 by ten Girl Scouts from Troop 69-279, the organization has grown from a Silver Award project into a massive operation that now serves over 1,800 families every month.
The pantry operates with a small staff and relies heavily on “the lifeblood of the organization”—its volunteers. Whether you have a few hours a week or can commit to a full day, your assistance is needed to sort, pack, and distribute food.
- Volunteer: Those interested can sign up via their Online Volunteer Form.
- In-Kind Donations: The pantry is currently accepting:
- Groceries: Canned goods, proteins (tuna, peanut butter), and dry pasta.
- Winter Gear: Gently used or new winter coats, hats, and gloves.
- Household Items: Clothes for all ages and basic hygiene products.
Where and When to Donate
Donations can be dropped off at the pantry’s Bloomington location at 3609 W State Road 46, located in Smith Pike Plaza, between Urban Air and El Ranchero.

What sets Pantry 279 apart is its “no questions asked” policy. Director Cindy Chavez emphasizes that the organization aims to remove the “institutionalized dread” often associated with seeking help. No proof is needed. Pantry 279 is a place where you can keep your dignity.
Beyond food, the pantry also runs the Elf Dispatch for holiday gifts and a Children’s Summer Supplemental Food Program, ensuring that the community’s youth are supported year-round.
