The Rotary Club of Bedford to honor Dr. George Sorrells at 14th annual John Williams Memorial Toast Feb. 27

BEDFORD — The Rotary Club of Bedford will celebrate a longtime local physician later this month during its annual John Williams Memorial Toast, honoring Dr. George Sorrells for decades of service to children and families in Lawrence County and surrounding communities.

The 14th annual event is scheduled for Feb. 27 at Bedford First Baptist Church. Doors will open at 5 p.m., with dinner served at 6 p.m.

Dr. Sorrells is being recognized for what Rotary leaders describe as a career defined by compassion and attentiveness to the needs of his patients. In a social media post announcing the honor, the club praised his “decades of caring for children and families from Lawrence County and surrounding areas,” noting that his expertise and kindness have impacted countless lives.

The John Williams Memorial Toast is an annual Rotary tradition that highlights individuals who exemplify service above self — the guiding principle of Rotary International. Named in memory of longtime community supporter John Williams, the event serves both as a celebration of local leadership and as a fundraiser to support Rotary projects and scholarships.

Over the years, the toast has recognized community members whose professional and volunteer efforts have strengthened Lawrence County through education, health care, business, and civic engagement. Proceeds from the evening typically support the Bedford Rotary’s ongoing initiatives, which include youth programs, scholarships, and other community service projects.

Tickets for this year’s event are $30 and may be purchased at Bedford Copy Trolley, the Bedford Chamber of Commerce, or from Bedford Rotary Club members.

Organizers encourage community members to attend and help celebrate Sorrells’ lasting impact.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together and recognize someone who has given so much,” Rotary officials said in the announcement. “Dr. Sorrells’ compassion for others and his attentiveness to people’s needs make him someone truly deserving of this honor.”
