Making a Splash: Shoals High School announces inaugural spring musical

SHOALS History is being made under the sea this April as Shoals High School prepares to debut its first-ever spring musical production. In a landmark moment for the local arts community, the Shoals Drama Club will bring the Disney favorite, The Little Mermaid Jr., to the stage.

While the school has a history of hosting plays, this production represents the first time the hallowed halls will be filled with the choreographed numbers and soaring ballads of a full-scale musical.

The production marks a significant milestone for the school’s drama program, which is currently in its second year of revival. Music Director Alicia Bailey noted that the leap from a standard play to a musical is a bold step forward for the 29 students currently in rehearsals.

This production marks a major milestone for our growing drama program added Bailey. There has been steady growth despite the challenges of building a program from the ground up.

The road to opening night has been paved with more than just talent and grit. The drama department has navigated several logistical hurdles, including high-profile productions that carry high costs; the licensing for the Disney Junior version alone exceeded $2,000. The school currently lacks a dedicated stage and professional theater resources. Sets, costumes, and lighting are being pieced together through ingenuity and community support.

Despite these obstacles, the cast and crew have spent months preparing to transform their school environment into an aquatic wonderland.

The community is invited to witness this historic debut during a three-show run:

  • Friday, April 17: Evening Performance
  • Saturday, April 18: Evening Performance
  • Sunday, April 19: Matinee Performance

Fundraising efforts remain active to cover the mounting costs of sets and costumes. Local residents and businesses interested in supporting the arts are encouraged to donate to the drama program or attend the performances to cheer on the student performers.
