City of Bloomington earns top global environmental transparency recognition for second year in a row

BLOOMINGTON – For the second consecutive year, the City of Bloomington has been recognized as a top leader in environmental transparency by CDP, a global nonprofit that runs the world’s only independent environmental disclosure system for companies, capital markets, cities, states, and regions.

After receiving an ‘A’ score in 2024, Bloomington received another ‘A’ score for its disclosure in 2025. The top status in CDP’s scoring system, an ‘A’ score, recognizes strong leadership in environmental transparency, climate action, and resilience planning. Of the 738 cities across the globe scored by CDP in 2025, only 120 earned ‘A’ status. Bloomington’s repeated recognition is a testament to the City’s ongoing commitment to leadership, innovation, and transparency in our climate and resilience planning and policy.

Shawn Miya, Assistant Director of Sustainability

“Bloomington is proud to be recognized as one of the top sustainability leaders in the nation,” said Shawn Miya, Assistant Director of Sustainability. “We are grateful for the opportunity to support our residents, small businesses, and nonprofits with grant and rebate programs that help to move the needle from ideas to project implementation. Each investment in municipal and community projects helps us reach our goal of net zero emissions by 2050.”

Earning a spot on CDP’s A-List is a significant achievement that reflects the highest standard of local climate leadership. To achieve this status, cities must publicly disclose through the CDP-ICLEI Track, a climate reporting platform, and meet rigorous criteria. This includes a city-wide emissions inventory, a climate risk and vulnerability assessment, and a published climate action plan. Residents can explore the City’s Climate Action Dashboard to see Bloomington’s emissions inventory, learn more about local climate risks and how the City’s Climate Action Plan is addressing them, and discover ways to contribute to Bloomington’s sustainability goals. Bloomington and its A-List peers demonstrate the continued importance of local leadership in climate innovation, infrastructure investment, and economic opportunity.
