Free Tax Prep: Jackson County United Way launches 16th VITA Season

SEYMOUR — As the 2026 tax season begins, Jackson County United Way is once again providing a vital resource for local families. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program has officially opened its doors for appointments, marking its 16th year of helping residents navigate the complexities of federal and state tax filings.

The program is powered by a team of dedicated, IRS-certified volunteers who ensure that participants receive every credit and deduction they are entitled to—without the high fees associated with commercial tax services.

The VITA program is designed to provide “peace of mind” for those who are unsure about filing on their own. To be eligible for free assistance, households must meet the following criteria:

  • Income Limit: Total household income must be $66,000 or less per year.
  • Business Status: Participants must not have a small business or rental property income.

The program is a cornerstone of United Way’s mission to support the ALICE population—an acronym for Asset-Limited, Income-Constrained, and Employed.

“We always know when spring is near because people start asking when VITA is going to start taking tax appointments,” said Stephanie Strothmann, Community Impact Director for Jackson County United Way. “This program specifically addresses the needs of our ALICE community members—those who are working hard but still struggling to afford the basic cost of living.”

To accommodate working schedules, appointments are available throughout the week at several locations across the county.
