Community Corrections offers FREE firewood ahead of winter storm

LAWRENCE CO. — With temperatures forecast to plummet into the single digits and snow expected to move into the region this weekend, Lawrence County Community Corrections is putting out an urgent call to help residents who rely on wood heat but may be struggling to afford it.

Despite having a significant stockpile of seasoned wood available, program officials say they have seen an unexpectedly low number of requests and are eager to get the word out before the “bitter” cold arrives.

The firewood is produced through the department’s Road Crew program, where individuals completing community service or fulfilling sentencing requirements repurpose trees and brush cleared from public areas. Participants cut, split, and stack the wood, transforming potential waste into a vital resource for local families.

“This is a win-win for everyone,” said Community Corrections Director Chad Shew. “Our crews learn valuable job skills and take pride in making a positive contribution, while families who rely on wood heat during the winter receive much-needed assistance”.

A Timely Resource as Temperatures Drop

The push to distribute the wood comes at a critical time for Southern Indiana. After a relatively mild start to January, the National Weather Service is tracking a shift in the weather pattern:

  • Friday Night: Temperatures are expected to drop to between 5°F and 10°F.
  • Saturday: There is a 40% chance of snow, with daytime highs reaching only about 19°F.
  • Sunday Night: Wind chills could drop even further, making home heating even more essential for vulnerable residents.

How to Obtain Firewood

To ensure the wood reaches those with the greatest need, residents must first determine their eligibility.

  1. Contact Your Local Trustee: Residents should reach out to their Township Trustee to see if they qualify for the program. Note: A full list of current trustees, including Millard Jones in Shawswick and Gary Scherschel in Indian Creek, can be found in the current county candidate filings.
  2. Obtain a Voucher: Once qualified, residents will receive a firewood voucher.
  3. Schedule a Pickup: Contact Chad Shew at 812-279-8274 to arrange for the pickup of the wood at Camp Rivervale.

“We currently have quite a bit of firewood stockpiled,” Shew noted. “With the bitter temperatures and snow predictions, I want to help anyone that we can.”
