LOWELL – It is with great sadness that we must announce the passing of ISP K9 Nikan, who retired in October of 2022. Nikan was known for his exceptional work ethic, calm demeanor, and unwavering loyalty to his handler, Sgt. Justin Hansen.

Throughout his career, Nikan played a vital role in numerous investigations. He used his uncanny ability to sniff out illegal drugs with incredible results. Nikan completed his career with the following stats: Marijuana- 1,126 lbs., Methamphetamine- 12 lbs., Ecstasy- 18 lbs., Cocaine- 38 lbs., Crack- 4 lbs., Heroin- 12 lbs., and $2,397,293.00 of U.S.C.
Following retirement, Nikan remained a beloved member of the Hansen family. His impact extended far beyond law enforcement, shaping personal relationships and leaving behind a legacy of service, dedication and companionship that will not be forgotten. The Hansen family asked to recognize Vale Park Animal Hospital for the compassionate and professional care they provided Nikan throughout his career, retirement, and in his final days. For handlers, a K9 is not only a law enforcement asset, but they are a trusted partner, friend, and companion whose bond extends beyond the uniform.
