Bloomington Police preparing for CFP National Championship game

BLOOMINGTON – In preparation for the upcoming National Championship Game between the Indiana Hoosiers and the Miami Hurricanes on Monday, January 19th, the Bloomington Police Department (BPD) is preparing for large crowds and increased call volume.

BPD will have significant staffing increases before, during and after the game and is working with state and local law enforcement partners to provide a safe experience for all during the event.

The Indiana State Police will also have an increased presence within the city.

Portions of East Kirkwood Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic on the day of the game and rideshare services will be directed to 4th Street for drop offs and pickups. There will be no parking allowed in the 400 and 500 block of East Kirkwood Avenue.

Buses and dump trucks will be utilized to close roadways and alleyways to ensure that vehicular traffic is not able to reach closed roadways.

Those visiting the downtown area on Monday should anticipate busy establishments and very cold temperatures, as the current forecast calls for lows in the single digits. Fans are advised to dress warmly and to be prepared to be outside for extended periods of time due to restaurants and bars potentially being at capacity.

“As fans come together to enjoy the excitement of the National Championship Game, we encourage everyone to celebrate responsibly,” said Captain Ryan Pedigo. “Whether you’re hosting friends, attending a watch party, or cheering from home, plan ahead, look out for one another, and make smart choices—especially when it comes to alcohol consumption. Go Hoosiers!”
