Bloomington Chamber marks 111 years with historic membership milestone

BLOOMINGTON — The Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce is entering its 111th year with record-breaking momentum, announcing that it has officially surpassed 900 members for the first time in over a decade.

The milestone follows a year of significant growth in 2025, which Chamber leaders say has bolstered their ability to advocate for the local business community and pursue “common-sense solutions” for Monroe County’s economic challenges.

As the organization moves into 2026, the surge in membership is expected to amplify its influence on critical regional issues. According to Chamber President and CEO Eric Spoonmore, the 111-year-old institution is more focused than ever on leveraging its expanded network to drive practical results.

“That growth strengthens our collective voice and expands our ability to provide resources and advocate for practical, common-sense solutions on the issues that matter most to our business community,” Spoonmore stated in a recent message to members.

2026 Legislative and Advocacy Priorities

The Chamber has already set a robust agenda for the new year, targeting several key areas that impact local business operations and community quality of life.

Priorities for 2026 include:

  • Housing and Public Safety: Continued advocacy for attainable workforce housing and a balanced approach to community safety.
  • Economic Infrastructure: Supporting the Monroe Convention Center expansion and ensuring utility infrastructure—such as sewer capacity—keeps pace with development.
  • Workforce Readiness: Strengthening partnerships between employers and educators to build a diverse and skilled talent pipeline.
  • Cutting Red Tape: Streamlining permitting processes and advocating for efficient, transparent local government regulations.

In a special address, Spoonmore credited the Chamber’s success to the active leadership of its members. “Together, we’re shaping a stronger, more prosperous future for Bloomington,” he said.
