BEDFORD — Special Olympics Indiana Lawrence County athletes gathered with family members, volunteers, and community supporters last month for their annual Christmas party, a holiday tradition that brings participants together away from athletic competition.

More than 50 athletes attended the event, joined by a similar number of relatives and caregivers. The evening offered an opportunity for athletes to relax and enjoy time with teammates and loved ones outside of practices and games.
The celebration was held in a community room provided by Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, which was decorated for the season, including a Christmas tree. Dinner was catered and served by Golden Corral staff before Santa Claus arrived to distribute gifts to the athletes.

Each athlete submitted a holiday wish list through the program’s Angel Tree and Adopt-a-Athlete initiative. Community supporters, including members of Remnant Church, Orleans Christian Church, B Fancy Boutique, Shoe Sensation, and United Auto Workers Local 440, fulfilled the requests and prepared the gifts for the celebration.

The room filled with laughter and excitement as athletes opened their presents and shared them with friends and caregivers, marking one of the most anticipated moments of the evening.
Special Olympics Indiana Lawrence County currently supports more than 50 athletes from the local community. The organization operates through donations and volunteer support and does not receive funding from federal, state, or local government programs.
