Lawrence County GOP calls caucus to fill council vacancy following death of Scott Smith

BEDFORD The Lawrence County Republican Central Committee has officially scheduled a caucus for later this month to fill an At-Large vacancy on the Lawrence County Council. The seat was left vacant following the passing of longtime public servant and Councilman Scott Smith, who died on Dec. 28, 2025.

Lawrence County Republican Party Chairman Chase Cummings will preside over the caucus, which is set to take place on Friday, Jan. 30, 2026. The individual selected by the committee will serve the remainder of Smith’s term.

Interested Republican candidates must be in good standing with the party and reside within Lawrence County. To be eligible for consideration, prospective candidates must submit the following paperwork to Chairman Cummings:

  • Indiana CEB-5 Form (Candidate for Appointment to Fill a Vacancy)
  • CAN-12 Form (Statement of Economic Interests)

The deadline for submission is Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. — exactly 72 hours prior to the start of the caucus.

The appointment will be decided by the Precinct Committeemen within Lawrence County. Under Indiana GOP rules.

The caucus will be held at the Lawrence County 4-H Fairgrounds, 11265 US 50 West, in the Expo Hall at 6:30 p.m.
