Indiana DNR invites public to honor Dr. King through National Day of Service

INDIANA On Monday, Jan. 19, 2026, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is encouraging Hoosiers to turn their “day off” into a “day on” by volunteering at state parks and properties in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

As the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service, MLK Day serves as a reminder of Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community” built on service, stewardship, and collective responsibility.

The DNR offers a wide range of opportunities for citizens to give back to the natural landscapes that define Indiana. Whether you are an outdoor enthusiast, a history buff, or a student looking to earn service hours, there is a role for every skill set.

Typical Volunteer Activities Include:

  • Trail Maintenance: Clearing debris and maintaining scenic pathways for winter hikers.
  • Habitat Restoration: Removing invasive species—such as bush honeysuckle or garlic mustard—to protect native Indiana flora.
  • Nature Center Support: Assisting interpretive naturalists with animal care, educational programming, or exhibit maintenance.
  • Cultural Heritage: Helping preserve and restore state-owned historical sites.
  • Self-Directed Service: Many properties offer “Grab-and-Go” kits for litter pickup along the shoreline and picnic areas.
