Obituary: Scott Smith

March 30, 1966 – December 28, 2025

Scott Smith, 59, of Williams, died at 8:00 pm on Sunday, December 28, 2025, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Born March 30, 1966, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Louie and Betty (Turner) Smith. He married Nikki Myers on July 22, 2008, and she survives. He was a member of the Mount Pleasant Christian Church. His survivors include his wife, Nikki; a son, Casey Smith and wife Brandi; a daughter, Gracie Smith; four grandchildren: Louie Smith, Stella Smith, Kennlyn Smith, and Stori Smith; and his mother, Betty Smith. He was preceded in death by his father, Louie Smith, a son, Hayden Smith, and a brother, Jim Smith.

Scott was a dedicated public servant and a lifelong Republican who believed deeply in local government and the people it serves. Over the years, he faithfully served our community as a Precinct Committeeman, State Convention Delegate, member of the Indian Creek Township Advisory Board, District 1 County Councilman, and County Council At-Large member. Most recently, Scott had begun his campaign to serve Lawrence County as County Commissioner.

Scott’s passion for local government was unmatched. He brought the same drive and work ethic to public service that he showed as a local business owner for decades, from car dealerships, a bar and restaurant, to underground construction. Scott harbored a deep-rooted care in all that he did. If he saw a fault in anything, a program, an administration, a local government, he would leave no stone unturned in an effort to create a resolution, ensuring longevity and prosperity for years to come. Scott was a leader with a true entrepreneurial mindset.

Public service ran deep in Scott’s family. His late father, Louie Smith, previously served Lawrence County as a County Council At-Large member, the very seat Scott held at the time of his passing. Scott is believed to be the only second-generation County Councilman in Lawrence County history, carrying on a legacy of service and commitment to this community.

Before politics, Scott was well known for his love of dirt track racing, where he built an impressive career in dirt late models. That competitive spirit, determination, and heart stayed with him

throughout his life and into public service. These comments are shared by Lawrence County GOP Chairman Chase Cummings, who had the honor of serving as Scott’s campaign manager during his 2024 County Council race. “Scott’s mentorship, friendship, and dedication to Lawrence County will never be forgotten.”

Scott has now finished the biggest race of all and reached the end of his journey here on earth. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and the countless people whose lives he touched.

Please keep Scott’s wife, Former Lawrence County GOP Chairwoman Nikki Smith, his son Casey, his daughter Gracie, who proudly served as his “personal chauffeur” and “official campaign field staffer”, along with his grandchildren, Louie, Stella, Stori, and Kennlyn, whom he adored and littered the hospital walls with perfectly imperfect notes and drawings, along with the entire Smith family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 3rd, 2026, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Jeff Hudelson officiating. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the hour of service on Saturday at the Day & Carter Mortuary. The family asks that friends consider making memorial contributions to the Lawrence County Cancer Patient Services. Family and friends may express condolences at www.daycarter.com.
