BEDFORD — Purdue Extension offices in Lawrence, Monroe, and Brown counties have announced they are joining the Statewide 2026 Virtual Master Gardener Basic Training course, offering local hobbyists and aspiring experts a chance to deepen their horticultural knowledge.

The comprehensive program is scheduled to run from February 3, 2026, through May 5, 2026, with a final exam following the conclusion of the sessions.
The training combines statewide expertise with local networking. Participants will explore a wide range of topics, including:
- Core Sciences: Plant science, soil and plant nutrition, and weed identification.
- Pest & Disease Management: Invasive species, plant disease diagnostics, animal pests, and insect control.
- Specialized Gardening: Fruit, vegetable, and lawn care, alongside herbaceous and woody ornamentals.
- Safety: Pesticide safety and alternative control methods.
The course utilizes a “hybrid” virtual model:
- Tuesday Evenings (6:30–8:30 p.m. ET): Live webinars via Webex featuring Purdue Extension subject matter experts.
- Wednesday Evenings (6:00–7:00 p.m. ET): Required “County Connection” hours. These sessions, which include planned field trips, will be held in person in Monroe County or virtually, allowing students to network with fellow volunteers from their area.

The deadline to register for the program is January 14, 2026.
The cost for the course is $185 for an individual, which includes the Master Gardener manual. A discounted rate of $290 is available for two people who agree to share a manual.
