New year, new start: First Step 5K returns to support Bertha’s Mission

BEDFORD — Runners of all abilities are invited to kick off the new year while supporting a good cause at the eighth annual First Step 5K, set for Saturday, Jan. 3, 2026, in downtown Bedford, to support Bertha’s Mission.

The race, which welcomes both competitive runners and casual participants, is designed to bring the community together in support of Bertha’s Mission. Whether participants are chasing a personal best or simply enjoying a walk with friends and family, organizers say the focus is on giving back and starting the year with purpose.

Race Directors Jim Sowders and John Storms joined WBIW’s Talk of the Town on Dec. 17 to update listeners on the race and its impact on the community. John Storms said this of the event:

The event was created by Dr. Jim Sowders, who came up with the idea while volunteering at Bertha’s Mission with his grandson. The race has traditionally been held on New Year’s Day — inspiring the name “First Step” — but beginning this year, it will move to the first Saturday after New Year’s Day. In addition to the 5K, a one-mile course will be available for those looking for a shorter route.

The race will be professionally timed by AB Timing, with Kelly Smith, who has timed this race and other community events, including the Limestone Capital Half Marathon.

The course will start and finish at the Downtown Depot, 1401 J St., and wind through the northern part of the city.

Race-day registration will run from 7 to 7:50 a.m., with the race starting at 8 a.m. Participants may register online at runsignup.com or in person on the day of the event. The entry fee is $25 through Dec. 24 and $30 after that date, with a $5 savings for those who register by Dec. 24. Race shirts are guaranteed for the first 100 registrants.

Every dollar raised will go directly to Bertha’s Mission to provide meals for those in need. Jim Sowders said of Bertha’s Mission and their impact on the community:

Checks should be made payable to Bertha’s Mission. Donations to the mission may also be made through RunSignup.com or on-site at the race site, the Downtown Depot in Bedford.
