Indiana State Library’s digital archives offer unique glimpse into the past with rare newspaper recipes

INDIANA – The Indiana State Library’s Digital Collections contain a selection of vintage newspapers that can’t be found anywhere else.

Among the community events and obituaries commonly found in historical newspapers, readers can also discover recipes.

Below is one such recipe, provided on the Home Page of the Glen Park Herald, published in Gary on Oct. 20, 1933:

Apple Fritters
– 1 cup flour
– 1/2  teaspoon salt
– 1 teaspoon baking powder
– 1/4 cup sugar
– 1/4 teaspoon mace or cinnamon
– 2 eggs
– 1 tablespoon melted fat
– 1/2 cup milk
– 1 1/2 cups chopped apples

The recipe reads: Sift the flour, baking powder, salt, spices, and sugar together. Add eggs, unbeaten with melted fat, milk, and apples. Stir until well mixed. Drop by spoonfuls into hot fat and cook until golden brown.

Those browsing the Indiana State Library’s Digital Collections are only a few clicks away from learning about tried-and-true cooking techniques from yesteryear.

The newspaper librarians at the State Library continually comb through donations and digitize the rarest title runs for inclusion in the collection. Researchers should check the collections frequently for the latest additions.
