BLOOMINGTON – Local nature enthusiasts and community members are being called upon to dedicate a day to environmental stewardship during the upcoming Weed Wrangles – Invasive Plant Awareness Days. The effort aims to control invasive species in Lower Cascades Park, helping create healthier, more sustainable habitats for local wildlife.

Organizers are seeking 25 enthusiastic volunteers for this essential workday, which promises to be both educational and impactful.
Volunteers will work directly alongside environmental experts, learning valuable techniques for identifying and managing non-native, invasive plants that threaten the park’s biodiversity.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to spend time in nature, learn from experts, and make a tangible difference in the health of our local ecosystems,” says Gillian Field, the event organizer.
Duties will involve:
- Bending, hiking, and climbing as needed to reach invasive plants.
- Using sharp tools for removal (tools and gloves will be provided).
Organizers stress that this is a workday, and appropriate attire is necessary to ensure safety and comfort. All participants are advised to dress for outdoor, woodsy work, which includes:
- Long pants and sturdy, closed-toe shoes.
- A long-sleeved shirt or a t-shirt (layering is recommended).
- Bring a hat, bug spray, and a reusable water bottle.
This protective gear is vital for guarding against overheating, scratches, insect bites, and ticks.
