Celebrating National Adoption Month

INDIANA – November marks National Adoption Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the urgent need for adoptive families and celebrating the joy of adoption.

State lawmakers, including State Reps. Martin Carbaugh (R-Fort Wayne) and Julie McGuire (R-Indianapolis) are taking the opportunity to highlight legislative actions taken this year to better support Indiana’s most vulnerable children and outline key resources for Hoosiers considering adoption.

According to Reps. Carbaugh and McGuire, the General Assembly took significant steps during the most recent legislative session to provide greater support to children in need and the families who care for them.

These legislative efforts aim to:

  • Strengthen the state’s foster care system.
  • Make the adoption process more accessible and affordable for Indiana families.
  • Provide financial and emotional resources to adoptive and kinship caregivers.

Resources for Exploring Adoption

For Hoosiers interested in exploring adoption or learning how they can help a child in need, the lawmakers point to several valuable resources:

  • The Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS): DCS is the primary resource for information on foster care and adoption within the state. They offer detailed guides on the necessary steps, requirements, and available financial assistance.
  • Adoption Agencies: Numerous licensed private adoption agencies across Indiana can provide personalized guidance through the domestic or international adoption process.
  • Informational Meetings and Seminars: Many organizations host free, non-committal information sessions throughout the year to help prospective parents understand the different paths to adoption.

Reps. Carbaugh and McGuire encourage all Hoosiers to consider the impact they could have on a child’s life, whether through becoming a foster parent, adopting, or supporting local child advocacy organizations.
