SOUTH BEND —The Indiana State Police (ISP) has launched an investigation following the death of an inmate who suffered a suspected medical emergency at the St. Joseph County Jail this afternoon, Saturday, November 1, 2025.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. in the jail’s medical ward. According to a preliminary investigation, the inmate, a 50-year-old male, began to experience a medical emergency.
Jail staff immediately initiated life-saving measures, including the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), until South Bend EMTs arrived on the scene. Despite these extensive efforts, the inmate was pronounced deceased at the jail.
The Indiana State Police have taken over the investigation at the request of the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending family notification.
An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted on Monday, November 3, 2025, at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to determine the exact cause and manner of death.
