Fall fish stocking underway across Indiana waters

STATEWIDE—The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is carrying out its annual fall fish stocking program, introducing thousands of catchable-sized fish into more than 130 bodies of water across the state.

This effort, which runs from October through mid-November, aims to boost sport fishing opportunities for anglers.

The primary focus is on species that thrive in cooler temperatures, particularly in urban areas:

  • Channel Catfish: Over 130 locations will receive catfish measuring 7 to 11 inches.
  • Rainbow Trout: Approximately 10-inch rainbow trout will be stocked in seven locations.
  • Brown Trout: Brown trout, measuring 7 to 8 inches, are planned for release into 12 locations.

In addition to the immediately catchable-sized fish, the DNR is also stocking several smaller species this fall to support fisheries management and maximize hatchery capacity. These fish, including panfish, walleye, and muskie, will require several years to reach harvestable sizes.

The entire stocking plan is developed based on recommendations from fisheries biologists to ensure the best chance of enhancing sport fishing for Indiana anglers.

Stocking dates are highly dependent on prevailing weather and water temperatures. The DNR advises those seeking specific stocking locations and dates to check the information available online.
