Woman dies in custody after arrest at Seminary Park

BLOOMINGTON — A 64-year-old woman died Friday while being taken into the Monroe County Jail after her arrest by the Bloomington Police Department (BPD).

The incident began at approximately 11:25 a.m. on Friday, October 17, when BPD officers observed the woman in Seminary Park. After making contact, officers confirmed she had an active arrest warrant issued by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. She was taken into custody “without incident” and transported to jail.

According to a statement from BPD Captain Ryan Pedigo, the woman’s condition declined rapidly while she was in the sallyport—the secure, controlled entrance to the jail—waiting to be transferred into the jail’s custody.

She initially complained of “feeling hot”. Her condition worsened quickly, and an ambulance was called at 12:07 p.m.

Before emergency medical services arrived, the woman became unresponsive.

Officers immediately began attempting to revive the woman. They started CPR at 12:16 p.m. and administered Narcan, a medication used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.

The resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead at the scene while still in the jail’s sallyport.

The woman’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The Monroe County Coroner’s Office will perform an autopsy to determine the official cause and manner of death. The BPD confirmed that the officers involved were wearing body cameras and that the investigation remains open.
