INDIANA — Armadillos, once native only to the southern United States, have been spotted with increasing frequency in Indiana, and a new program will give residents a closer look at the unusual animals.

Purdue Extension of Vigo County is hosting a virtual “Lunch and Learn” session on Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. EST. The presentation will cover armadillo biology, behavior, diet, habitat, and their current distribution across the state.

The nine-banded armadillo, the only species found in the United States, has steadily expanded its range northward in recent decades. Sightings in Indiana have become more common, particularly in the southern and western regions.
The program will also highlight how armadillos forage for insects and grubs, their largely nocturnal habits, and the environments they prefer. While they are not considered dangerous, their digging can sometimes damage lawns and gardens.
The virtual session is free and open to the public, with registration available through Purdue Extension of Vigo County.
