Bedford Knights of Columbus will hold 48th Annual Tootsie Roll Drive this weekend to support local citizens with disabilities

BEDFORD The Bedford Knights of Columbus will hold their 48th Annual Tootsie Roll Drive this weekend, Sept. 5-6, to raise funds for local organizations that support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

About 100 volunteers will be collecting donations, including members of the Youth Group from First Baptist Church, Lawrence County Special Olympics participants, and board members and employees of Lawrence County ARC. Volunteers will be stationed at local businesses, including Walmart, Rural King, Price Less IGA, and Johnny Junxions. Contributions can also be mailed to Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive, 2202 M Street, Bedford, IN 47421.

Funds raised during the drive will benefit the Lawrence County Arc, Lawrence County Special Olympics, and special education programs in local schools, including North Lawrence Community Schools, Mitchell Community Schools, St. Vincent de Paul School, Lawrence County Independent Schools, and Springville Community Academy.

Tootsie Roll Drive Chairman Greg Stanley appeared on WBIW’s Talk of the Town on Tuesday morning to discuss the event in detail:

Since the first drive in 1978, the Bedford Knights of Columbus Council has raised more than $530,000. Those funds have been used to provide essential resources such as the Coats for Kids program, life-skills classroom furnishings, accessible playground equipment, instructional supplies, and protective awnings for children with disabilities as they board buses at local schools.

Last year, the drive broke the previous record and raised over $44,000. Get out this weekend and continue to support those in our community in need, and help break the record again this year!
