BEDFORD — Nathan Watson, Director at the Bedford Public Library, has announced his candidacy in the Republican caucus to fill the Bedford City Council at-large seat being vacated by Dan Bortner.
Bortner, who is in the middle of his second term, said this week he will resign effective Aug. 31 after accepting a position as CEO of the Lawrence County Economic Growth Council and Bedford Chamber of Commerce.
Watson said his campaign will focus on three priorities: economic growth, quality of place, and public safety.

“I care deeply about the future of Bedford — its families, its businesses, and the opportunities we can create together,” Watson said in a statement. “With emphasis on these core issues, we can ensure that Bedford is a place that people want to live, work, stay, and play.”
Watson has served as director of the Bedford Public Library for four years, overseeing public budgets and tax dollars. He is also president of Bedford Revitalization and a former president of the Bedford Chamber of Commerce. He said those roles have given him experience in coalition building, workforce development, and investing in community assets.
“I regularly attend City Council meetings and am aware of the current issues facing our city,” Watson said. “My experience with public finance and leadership, combined with my reputation for creative problem solving, will be an asset to the council and to our great city.”
Watson grew up in Lawrence County, graduating from Mitchell High School. After college and work in Evansville, he returned to Bedford in 2016, where he has since bought a home and raised a family.
“I believe in Bedford. This community has been very good to me, and I would like to give something back,” he said. “I look forward to working with the Mayor, the Council, and the citizens of our great city to build a stronger, more vibrant Bedford.”
