Flags of Honor: Special flags grace Lawrence County Veterans Affairs Office

BEDFORD— Two flags, rich with symbolism and history, are now proudly displayed outside the Lawrence County Veterans Affairs office in the lower level of the courthouse. Lawrence County Veterans Affairs Officer Brad Bough shared the stories behind these significant donations, which serve as powerful reminders of service and sacrifice.

Gold Star Family Flag

One of the flags is a Gold Star Flag, donated by a local Gold Star family. This flag serves as a solemn tribute to the service members from the community who were killed or died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The Gold Star symbolizes the profound loss and sacrifice of a family that has lost a loved one in military service.

“This flag was donated to Lawrence County by a local Gold Star family in memory of service members who were killed or died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces,” said Brad Bough, Lawrence County Veterans Affairs Office. “They did this from the heart and wanted to remain anonymous.”

Flag Flown Over the U.S. Capitol

The second flag is an American flag that was flown over the United States Capitol building in Washington, D.C. This special flag was presented to the Lawrence County Veterans Service Office by United States Senator Jim Banks on July 23, 2025. It is displayed alongside a Certificate of Authenticity from the Architect of the Capitol, verifying its distinguished history.

These flags stand as a testament to the community’s deep respect for its veterans and fallen heroes. Officer Bough noted that they are an essential part of honoring the men and women who have served the nation.
