BEDFORD – With North Lawrence Community Schools (NLCS) students heading back to the classroom starting tomorrow, August 6, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is issuing a reminder about school bus safety laws to ensure the well-being of children.
INDOT urges all motorists to be aware of school buses and the rules of the road when encountering them. Their safety campaign emphasizes the importance of knowing when to stop for a school bus.
On two-lane and multi-lane paved roads, vehicles traveling in both directions are required to stop when a school bus displays its flashing red lights and extended stop arm.

However, the rules differ for divided highways with a physical barrier or unpaved median separating lanes of traffic. On divided highways, only vehicles traveling behind the stopped school bus are required to stop. Vehicles traveling in the opposite direction may proceed with caution.
INDOT encourages drivers to be vigilant, reduce distractions, and watch for children as school buses will be on roadways throughout the NLCS district.
