Lincoln Elementary Green Thumbs garden bustles with harvest and happy helpers

BEDFORD– It was a bustling and bountiful day at Lincoln Elementary School, where Lincoln Green Thumbs members were busy harvesting a vibrant array of summer produce. Despite the hard work, spirits were high, and everyone left with armfuls of fresh vegetables and a good soaking.

The day’s harvest was impressive, including peppers, fragrant basil, sweet strawberries, crisp cucumbers, tender zucchini, and juicy tomatoes. Beyond the picking, the team also checked on and watered the broccoli that had been germinated just last week.

Preparation for future growth was also underway, with the germination of lettuce for the garden’s hydroponic system, which also received a thorough cleaning. Amidst all the productivity, there was time for tidying up through weeding and adding a touch of beauty with the planting of new flowers.

The young gardeners didn’t just work hard; they reaped the rewards. Each child was allowed to choose and take home a generous share of the freshly harvested vegetables. And, as seems to be a summer tradition in the garden, everyone ended up wet – a clear sign of fun being had while playing in the hose.

It was a day that perfectly blended productive gardening with the simple joys of summer, ensuring fresh produce for families and lasting memories for the young participants.
