INDIANA – Hoosier drivers will soon have a new, sleek option for their vehicles. The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) announced on Monday the release of a new “blackout” license plate, set to be available starting August 8.
This minimalist design, featuring a black background, offers vehicle owners a unique way to express themselves on the road.

BMV Commissioner Kevin Garvey highlighted the plate’s simple yet distinctive aesthetic. “It’s very simple in its design, but it allows car drivers and vehicle owners to express themselves in a way that they haven’t had,” Garvey said.
The blackout plate, approved by state lawmakers in House Enrolled Act 1391, will be available for cars, light trucks, motorcycles, and RVs. It comes with an annual fee of $45. For those eager to upgrade, current plate holders can swap their existing plates for a blackout design for the $45 fee plus an additional cost for the new plate.
The BMV has been teasing the new design on social media, encouraging Hoosiers to “swap the standard for something that stands out.” Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the new plate is also expected to generate several million dollars annually for the state, supporting Governor Mike Braun’s executive order to enhance BMV services.
