WEST LAFAYETTE – As the fall winds begin to whisper, it’s time for individuals, families, and organizations to unleash their creativity for a beloved annual tradition: the 16th Annual Trail of Scarecrows at Prophetstown State Park. The popular display will run from October 1 to November 2, offering a unique way to celebrate the autumn season.

Whether spooky or silly, frightful or fun, participants are invited to design and create their one-of-a-kind scarecrow to be featured along the park’s paved, accessible trail, perfect for hiking, biking, and strolls. This event provides a fantastic opportunity for local businesses and organizations to support the community, highlight their missions, or promote special events to thousands of park visitors throughout the fall. Individuals and families are also highly encouraged to join in the fun.
A key theme of the event is promoting recycling and upcycling, encouraging participants to repurpose used items and materials to craft “fun (and funky) art” for the trail. Participation is entirely free, with no registration fees required to enter a scarecrow.
The public will have a chance to engage directly with the display by voting for their favorite scarecrows. Votes are cast by making a $1 donation to the Interpretive Services fund, which supports education, arts, culture, and history programs at the park. Prizes will be awarded to the scarecrows that garner the most votes, so participants are encouraged to spread the word and encourage voting for their creations.
For those unable to sponsor a scarecrow, Prophetstown State Park welcomes other forms of support. Donations of merchandise or gift certificates are sought for contest prizes, and monetary contributions to the Interpretive Services programs are also greatly appreciated.
Aspiring scarecrow creators can find inspiration by visiting last year’s Trail of Scarecrows picture album at Facebook.com/ProphetstownSP, which showcases a variety of fun and creative ideas.
To enter a scarecrow, interested parties must register online by September 1.
