BEDFORD– As Independence Day approaches, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service is welcoming visitors to the Hoosier National Forest this Friday for outdoor celebrations. However, officials are issuing a strong reminder: Fireworks and pyrotechnics are strictly prohibited on all public lands, including every forest and campsite, every day.

With campgrounds expected to be full and recreation sites experiencing heavy use, visitors are urged to “leave fireworks and sparkly displays to your city and other professional organizations.” The reminder comes as nearly 9 out of 10 wildfires nationally are caused by humans.
To ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday, the Forest Service offers the following advice:
- Visit the Hoosier National Forest website for alerts on site and trail conditions.
- Have backup destinations in mind, as some areas may be temporarily closed or overcrowded.
- Stay water smart: Wear a personal flotation device (life vest) when participating in water activities.
- Recreate Responsibly: Note any fire restrictions before starting a campfire, carry tools to extinguish a flame, and report any fire by calling 911.
- Finally, “Know Before You Go.”
