BEDFORD – Cale Gates, a baseball star headed to Indiana University, was named Bedford North Lawrence’s male Athlete of the Year by the WBIW.com website.
Gates, who was named to the Indiana South All-Stars, hit .557 while slugging 7 home runs and scoring 43 runs. His on-base percentage was an incredible .700. He was the 17th player in school history to be chosen for the North-South All-Star series, and he was named All-Hoosier Hills Conference for the second straight season.
Patric Matson and Garrett Gabhart earned special Honorable Mention status. Matson, who signed with IU Kokomo, averaged 19.7 points and 5.2 rebounds for the Stars on the basketball court, and he was the champion in the long jump during the IHSAA’s Unified state finals. Gabhart won two swimming sectional races, setting a school record in the 100 butterfly, and finished 12th in the state finals in two events.
Other notable athletes who enjoyed outstanding seasons included Tate Tanksley (baseball and football), Jonah Bailey (cross country and track), Gibson Crane (football and basketball), Brady Byers (football), Evan Tillett (golf), Tyler Bellush (golf), Adriano Sullivan (soccer), Hiram Mullis (soccer and track), Braydon Patterson (track), Tripp Stahl (track and football) and Ethan Stancombe (wrestling).
WBIW.com named Ava Ratliff and Kendall Graves as co-winners of the female Athlete of the Year. The list of the Top 10 stories of the 2024-25 school year will also be announced.
