Lawrence County hosts kickoff ceremony for America 250 celebration in Bedford

BEDFORD – Lawrence County officially launched its multi-year commemoration of America’s 250th birthday with a community-wide kickoff event this past Saturday in downtown Bedford. This local event is part of the nationwide America 250 initiative, a campaign led by the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission to honor the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

While America 250 is being observed across the country, communities are encouraged to celebrate in ways that reflect their unique history. Lawrence County’s kickoff ceremony was designed to do just that—highlighting local contributions to the nation’s founding and development.

“This is the lead off till the next Fourth of July for the Semiquincentennial Commission. For me, it’s to recognize the veterans of the Revolutionary War because the foundation of America is built upon their blood and sacrifice as veterans of the first continental army, which just so happens to be, today is the 250th anniversary of United States Army’s forces,” stated Bedford City Councilman Brad Bough.

Held inside the historic Lawrence County Courthouse, the program featured speeches from local officials and historical representatives. A commemorative plaque was unveiled, honoring Revolutionary War veterans with ties to the area. The plaque will remain as a permanent tribute to the county’s early American patriots.

The event also marked the beginning of a series of programs that will span through July 4, 2026. These events will explore various aspects of national and regional history, offering educational experiences and community engagement for residents and visitors of all ages.

Guests were encouraged to arrive early for parking and seating. Following the formal program, attendees were invited to explore downtown Bedford, visit local businesses, and learn more about upcoming events tied to the America 250 campaign.

Lawrence County’s participation in this national initiative underscores the importance of local stories in shaping the broader American experience. By honoring its heritage and fostering civic pride, the county ensures its role in history is remembered and celebrated alongside the nation’s.
