Unlock Your Family History: Free DNA Genealogy Workshop coming June 14

INDIANAPOLIS – Aspiring genealogists and family history enthusiasts are invited to a free DNA Workshop on June 14, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event, featuring Angela Guntz of the Central Indiana DNA Interest Group, will delve into the power of using DNA to enhance genealogical research.

This workshop is open to the public and offers both in-person and virtual attendance options. Registration is required for all attendees. Please note that this event will not be recorded.

The day will feature three distinct sessions designed to help participants leverage DNA testing results to uncover family history, fill gaps in family trees, and apply new research methods.

  • Session 1: DNA Ethnicities and Thrulines (11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.) will explore DNA ethnicity estimates and Thrulines, teaching attendees how to interpret results and discover potential family tree connections.
  • Session 2: Shared Matches (12:15 p.m. – 1:15 p.m.) will focus on the importance of shared matches in confirming relationships and identifying genetic cousins. Participants will learn how to interpret their shared match lists to verify connections.
  • Session 3: Case Studies (1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.) will bring it all together, presenting practical techniques for analyzing shared match data to build family trees with confidence. Case studies will demonstrate how combining traditional methods with DNA insights can lead to breakthroughs in research.

Indiana librarians attending the workshop will receive Learning Experience Units (LEUs). For those attending in person, parking validation will be available for vehicles parked in the Senate Avenue parking garage, directly across from the library. Attendees are required to bring their parking ticket for validation.
