Lawrence County to unveil new plaque honoring Revolutionary War patriots

BEDFORD – The Lawrence County Commissioners have approved the installation of a new plaque that will honor additional individuals who served in the American Revolution and are buried in Lawrence County. The John Wallace Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will unveil this new plaque on June 14th at 10:00 a.m. in the courthouse rotunda.

This forthcoming plaque will be the third of its kind displayed at the courthouse, increasing the total number of honored service members to 48. The original plaque, established in 1949, featured 29 names, while a second plaque, added in 1976, included 16 more. The new addition will add 13 names to the esteemed rolls of those who contributed to the Revolution and are interred in Lawrence County.

According to Martha Cox of the John Wallace Chapter, the $1,800 cost of the new plaque was successfully covered through various fundraising efforts and a $500 grant. The DAR chapter will also be responsible for funding the installation of the new plaque and the professional cleaning of the two existing plaques. The project’s completion was strategically aimed to coincide with the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary.

This initiative highlights the John Wallace Chapter’s unwavering dedication to preserving the memory and legacy of those who fought for American independence.
