LAWRENCE CO. – Thanks to a generous $5,500 grant from Duke Energy, Lawrence County Emergency Management is expanding its program to provide free weather radios to the county’s most vulnerable residents.
This initiative is crucial for ensuring that individuals, especially those without consistent access to weather updates via the internet or cable television, can remain informed during potentially dangerous weather conditions.

Lawrence County Emergency Management Director Valerie Luchauer reported a significant demand for these essential devices. “We gave away all our weather radios,” Luchauer stated. “But this grant allowed us to purchase more. There is a waiting list, but we ordered 215, and that will fill the waiting list, and we will have extras to give away.”
Luchauer emphasized the program’s vital role in community safety. “We want to ensure that those most vulnerable are not left in the dark when severe weather strikes,” she added.
This year has been the most volatile storm season with more tornado warnings since Luchauer has been director.
Residents who meet the criteria for need are encouraged to contact the Lawrence County Emergency Management office at 812-277-9680 to inquire about receiving a weather radio.
