MONROE COUNTY—On May 16th, at approximately 7:30 p.m., the western and south-central parts of Monroe County were struck by an EF-2 tornado and high winds, causing the loss of homes, buildings, and property to our residents. The Board of Commissioners has signed a local disaster declaration, which is active.
Debris Cleanup and Disposal
Residents affected by this storm are responsible for their own debris cleanup. There will be 3 locations identified within the tornado path, where there will be 2 dumpsters per site. 1 dumpster for yard/tree waste and the other for home debris. Those will only be available for a period of 2 weeks, which will start on Friday, May 23rd, and end on Friday, June 6th. A 4th site is available at the Monroe County Debris Management Site located at 7740 North Fish Road, Bloomington, IN 47408, between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM Monday–Friday. Only take trees and vegetation debris to this location.
Do not drag your debris to the edge of the road, as Monroe County is not responsible for the removal of private property debris.
One set of dumpsters will be located between Elwren and Harmony Road. A second set of dumpsters will be located near the area of E. Jackson Creek Drive and S. Sandpiper Drive. A third set of dumpsters will be located at the Lighthouse Christian Academy by noon on Saturday, May 24th.
Red Cross Assistance and Case Management
American Red Cross will be out in the field and assisting those impacted at their current location. They will no longer be at the church. If you are in need of assistance from the Red Cross, you can call the hotline at 1-800-733-2767 at any time.
Volunteering
Due to the damage and current hazardous conditions, please don’t spontaneously volunteer. If you are interested in volunteering to support our community’s recovery efforts, please sign up through the Bloomington Volunteer Network (BVN) at https://www.bloomingtonvolunteernetwork.org/.
