INDIANA – A valuable new resource for anyone planning tree planting projects in Indiana has been released. The long-awaited Indiana Tree Species Selection Guide is now complete and readily accessible to the public.
This comprehensive guide is designed to assist individuals, organizations, and communities in making informed decisions when choosing tree species for various planting endeavors. It emphasizes the numerous benefits of utilizing native Indiana tree species and underscores the critical importance of selecting the “right tree for the right location” to ensure successful growth and ecological benefits. The guide also includes specific considerations for those planning to plant street trees.
Complementing the selection guide is the Tree Species List, a comprehensive compilation of all tree species native to Indiana. This list provides quick and easy access to key information about each species, including its growth rate, mature size, and light preferences. The Tree Species List is conveniently included within the main guide and is available as a separate document for quick reference.
The creators of these resources have prioritized user-friendliness, ensuring that the categories and information presented require minimal prior knowledge of trees. This approach aims to make proper species selection accessible to everyone, from seasoned professionals to first-time planters.
These valuable resources are intended to be easy to navigate and provide practical information to support effective tree species selection. The Indiana Tree Species Selection Guide and the Tree Species List are now available. They can be found on the publications tab of the relevant website, under the section titled ‘Tree Selection, Planting, and Care.’
Important Note for Current Grant Awardees:
For those currently receiving grants for tree planting projects, please be aware that the new Tree Species List will replace the existing list previously included in “Addendum A: Tree Planting Project Requirements.” Grant recipients with questions about this change are encouraged to ask CUF for clarification.
The release of these resources is expected to be a significant asset for promoting the planting of appropriate and beneficial tree species throughout Indiana, contributing to healthier ecosystems and more vibrant communities.
