New Albany repeats sweep of BNL

NEW ALBANY – For the second time in four days, New Albany rolled to a 5-0 win over Bedford North Lawrence during girls high school tennis action on Saturday.

After posting a victory over the Stars on Wednesday in the consolation round of the Hoosier Hills Conference tournament, the Bulldogs repeated their performance as BNL made its third trip to the Ohio River in a week.

“We played much better today than we did on Wednesday,” BNL coach Ian Dillman said. “We had to shuffle our lineup once again.”

Katie Sullivan stopped Bailey Guthrie 6-0, 6-0 at No.1 singles, Diana Ready conquered Laura Wires 6-4, 6-1 at No.2, and Kyra Shaughnessy topped Anne Curtis 6-1, 6-0 at No.3.

In doubles, Callie Loesch and Sarah McBride cruised past Lauren Salzmann and Jada Key 6-0, 6-1 at No.1, while Venus Alstott and Alyssa Berryman edged the new BNL duo of Claire Edwards and Emma Conover 6-1, 6-3 at No.2.

”Laura made her return to 2 singles and showed off her skills,” Dillman said. “She took her girl all the way in that first set. She ultimately was still struggling with her injuries, but stuck it out and played some great points.

”Emma and Claire teamed up for the first time this season. They played great for the first time playing together. Emma was able to help Claire with her positioning. Those two together were awesome. Claire’s going to be a strong doubles player in the future, once she can get her positioning down.”

BNL will learn its postseason draw for the sectional on Monday. The Stars will host the five-team event, which will include Brownstown, Seymour, Jennings County and Trinity Lutheran.
