Red Devils stop Stars in first round of HHC

BNL’s Emma Conover returned from injury to play No.3 singles for the Stars at Jeffersonville.

JEFFERSONVILLE – Jeffersonville advanced to the semifinal round of the Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament with a 5-0 victory over Bedford North Lawrence during girls high school tennis action on Monday.

The Red Devils dropped only two games in doubles and the top two singles. BNL’s Emma Conover returned from injury to force a second-set tiebreaker before falling to Jocelyn Olsen 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) at No.3 singles.

“Emma made her comeback,” BNL coach Ian Dillman said. “She played well and didn’t look to be in pain, which is always a good sign. She was able to push her girl to a tiebreaker in the second set but ultimately came up short in the end. It was still a good first match back, to get something under your belt before the sectional.

”We knew Jeff was a good team and we knew we’d have to give it our all. Tonight our biggest opponent wasn’t Jeff, it was ourselves. We constantly struggle with gluing our feet to the floor and refusing to move. We could’ve gotten some balls back if we ran for them, or stayed moving during the point. It’s back to the drawing board for footwork once again.”

The Stars will compete in the consolation round of the tournament on Wednesday.
