Obituary: Doris Jean Coomer

May 28, 1933 – May 9, 2025

Doris Jean Coomer, 91, of Bedford, passed away at 8:07 am on Friday, May 9, 2025, at Majestic Care in Bedford.

Born May 28, 1933, in Petersburg, IN, she was the daughter of Homer Dyer, Gilves Howard, and Mary (Jerrell) Howard. She married Rev. Ralph Coomer on June 3, 1949, and he preceded her in death on September 14, 1997. She had worked at JoAnn’s Fabrics for 15 years. She was a devoted pastor’s wife and a lifelong teacher. She taught Sunday School, Child Evangelism Fellowship, and Pre-K. She was an avid baseball fan, cheering for the Arizona Diamondbacks. She attended the Tabernacle of Praise, Oolitic Pentecostal Church, and was very active in Child Evangelism Fellowship for over 50 years.

Survivors include a son, Mike Coomer and wife, Susan, of Bedford; a daughter, Rita Whitehead and husband, Kenny, of Heltonville; a grandson, Rusty Coomer and wife, Kristney, of Springville; a granddaughter, Kristina Allen and husband, John, of Erie, PA; a great grandson, Noah Coomer, of Springville; a brother, Paul Howard and his wife, Faye, of Peoria, AZ; a sister, Linda Cummins, of AL. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a grandson, Jeffrey Coomer, a sister, Ruth Dyer, a son-in-law, Kenneth McCartan, and a niece, Sabrina Carroll.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Monday, May 12th, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Marty Speer and Pastor Tom Jones officiating. Burial will be on Friday, May 16th, in the VA National Memorial Cemetery in Arizona. Visitation will be from 11:00 am until the hour of service on Monday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.
