Indiana State Police investigate officer-involved shooting in Grant County

MARION – The Indiana State Police, at the request of the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, are investigating a police-involved shooting in which a Marion, IN, man died.

Preliminary investigations by Indiana State Police detectives revealed that today, at approximately 4:36 p.m., members of the Marion Police Department, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, and the Indiana State Police responded to a residence in the 3600 block of South Washington Street following a report of an individual armed with a knife who had sustained a self-inflicted injury.

Upon arrival, officers observed a man identified as Derick P. Morgan, 56, of Marion, armed with a knife and bleeding from his neck. The officers issued several commands to Mr. Morgan; however, Mr. Morgan charged at the Marion Police Officer. The deputy subsequently discharged his duty weapon, striking Mr. Morgan at least once.

Despite life-saving efforts, Mr. Morgan succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the sceneNotification has been made to Morgan’s family.

The deputy involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure for the Grant County Sheriff’s Office following an officer-involved shooting.

The Indiana State Police is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Grant County Prosecutor’s Office.

This investigation is ongoing, and no further information will be released at this time. Once completed, the findings will be submitted to the Grant County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
