Spring greens abound at the Bloomington Farmers’ Market

BLOOMINGTON – The Bloomington Farmers’ Market is currently bursting with the vibrant hues of spring as fresh, flavorful greens take center stage. While many leafy vegetables and herbs are available throughout the year, this season marks their peak, offering exceptional tenderness and abundance.

Market-goers can find a wide array of “greens,” the umbrella term for these nutritional powerhouses, perfect for enjoying raw in salads, sautéed as a side dish, or added to soups and stews. Staples like crisp lettuce, peppery arugula, and hearty collards are plentiful, alongside springtime specialties such as nutrient-rich kale, versatile spinach, and colorful Swiss chard. The darker the leaves, the greater the health benefits, packed with vitamins C, beta-carotene, and fiber.

A prime example of the market’s fresh offerings is John McMahan of McMahan’s Natural Garden Farms. Last Saturday, he showcased a beautiful selection that included various lettuces, kale, collards, spinach, mustard greens, Swiss chard, beet tops, and bok choy. This Saturday, shoppers can look forward to the addition of heads of Chinese cabbage to his impressive display.

Music at the Market

Adding to the market’s vibrant atmosphere this Saturday will be the musical stylings of Jesse Beals. Originally from Gas City, Beals is a talented multi-instrumentalist and songwriter now captivating southern Indiana with his clever and thought-provoking original songs, highlighted by his sharp banjo playing.

With a background in punk and metal bands alongside his acoustic roots, Beals often performs with the Lowlanders, a hillbilly bluegrass string band influenced by legends like James King and the Stanley Brothers.

IU Latin Jazz Ensemble

Joining the musical lineup will be a contingent from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music’s Latin Jazz Ensemble, led by Professor Wayne Wallace. Representing the 25-member group this Saturday will be Zoey Thornburg on trumpet, Sai Ramani on tenor saxophone, Michael Rodriguez on trombone, Zach Rosenstiehl on bass, and Jackson Foerster on drums, promising a lively and engaging performance.

Mayor at the Table

For those looking to connect with local government, the Mayor’s Team at the Table will also be present at the market this Saturday. This community outreach program provides an opportunity for market-goers to interact directly with the mayor and various department heads from the City of Bloomington.
