Lovell ‘Gene’ Johnson, 88, of Shoals, passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025, at Poplar Care Strategies in Loogootee.
Born March 22, 1937, in Cale, he was the son of Lovell and Hazel (Pipher) Johnson. Gene married Frieda Mae Cobb at the Dover Hill Methodist Church on June 20, 1958, and she survives. He graduated from Shoals High School in 1956. Gene was the owner and operator of Dover Hill Market, and he retired from National Gypsum after more than 33 years. He was a charter member of the Dover Hill Christian Union Church and a Veteran of the National Guard, serving for six years. Gene had passions for his faith, his family, and the Indiana Hoosiers.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife, Frieda; children, Randy (Lisa) Johnson, Kevin Johnson, Cindy (Jeff) Phillips, and Missy (Scott) Fields; grandchildren, Deanna (Brian) Caswell, Matthew (Amanda) Johnson, Jenni (Eddie) Craney, Tyler (Cynthia) Johnson, Justin (Cassie) Phillips, Brad (Katie) Phillips, Ashley Phillips, Amber Fields, and Shelby Fields; Great-grandchildren, Natasha Caswell, Isaac Johnson, Asher Johnson, Mackenzie Craney, Jocelyn Craney, James Phillips, Kyea Phillips, Kennedy Phillips, and a baby boy expected in October; and two nieces, Tammy (Jim) Nolan and Lisa (Greg) Rush.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Gary Johnson; and two brothers, Ronnie Johnson and Donald Johnson in infancy.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at the Queen-Lee Chapel of George Funeral Care, with Mark Otero and Steve Sims officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday at the Queen-Lee Chapel in Shoals.
